What a groove changes

A perimeter groove is useful for carving or other work that releases liquid. Its capacity depends on width, depth, path length, and interruptions. A decorative shallow line should not be described as though it holds a measured volume.

The groove occupies cutting area and takes additional cleaning. It can also conflict with corner radii, handholds, edge profiles, and engraving.

What a flat surface keeps

A flat board provides the largest uninterrupted working area for its outside dimensions. If both faces have compatible details, it can be reversible. It is also simpler to refinish because there is no recessed path to preserve.

Check the geometry

  • Groove inset from every finished edge and corner.
  • Remaining material below the groove.
  • Clearance from top and bottom edge profiles.
  • Position relative to feet, handholds, and engraving.
  • Actual usable area inside the groove.

Specify dimensions. “With juice groove” does not define width, depth, inset, path, or capacity.

Choose from the food and workflow

Choose a groove when liquid collection is a regular task and the reduced area is acceptable. Choose a flat surface when maximum area, two-sided use, and simpler refinishing matter more.
